Rebecca Johnson is a student completing the Child Development Practitioner program at Seneca College in Toronto. She recently took our AllergyAware.ca online course Anaphylaxis in Child Care Settings. We reached out to Rebecca to ask about her experience, and what she took away from the course.
What were you hoping to learn from the course before you signed up?
When I first heard that I had to take this online course as a requirement of my program at Seneca, I was curious to know how the information would be conveyed. I was hoping to learn about the proper way to administer an EpiPen® and the various signs and causes of allergic reactions. My main goal was to gain all the information I needed to allow me to do my job as well as possible.
What was the experience like for you? What did you learn?
The experience was a great one for me. I love how the information was clear and organized, and I really liked how concise the course was and the length of time it took. I learned everything I needed to know about anaphylaxis in a child care setting, and what my responsibilities were as a child care worker. Personally, I am a visual and auditory learner and the whole experience fit my learning style. The material was not dry or boring; it was informative and interesting.
How did the new knowledge help you?
The information that I learned has given me more confidence at work. I work with many children who have potentially life-threatening allergies, and knowing how to respond to emergencies in an appropriate manner gives me peace of mind. I have also been able to share the knowledge with my co-workers and family. I am definitely more aware of possible reactions and the signs and symptoms that may or may not be present.
Is there anything else about the course or managing allergies that you’d like to share with our readers?
I think this course is amazing and should be implemented at all child care facilities. It is a great educational tool that provides people with valuable lifesaving information for free. It is very accessible and easy to use. And the best part is that you can do it on your own time and at your own pace. The use of a video to present the information makes it easy to understand the information and easy to follow. I have already recommended this course and will continue to do so, so people can gain the knowledge they need to respond appropriately to an allergic reaction.
