Kid spotlight: Building confidence in treating anaphylaxis
Brielle is a 7-year-old from Winnipeg, MB who was diagnosed with multiple food allergies at age 3. She is allergic to peanut, tree nuts, and sesame.
Brielle was inspired to participate in our Know it. Treat it. campaign to let others with food allergy know that they’re not alone – there are many kids just like her who have food allergy too.
In her Know it. Treat it. story, she spoke about having anaphylaxis after eating a doughnut, and with her mom supervising, administered her EpiPen® to treat the reaction. It was her family’s goal to have her give the device to herself, and she did just that.
Brielle gained confidence from this situation and decided that if a 6-year-old like her could do it, others could too. Brielle says, “I gave myself my own EpiPen and it was easy!”.
Thank you Brielle for sharing your story and taking the fear out of anaphylaxis! You’re helping to empower others to recognize the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and to treat it with epinephrine.
Even though Food Allergy Awareness Month is now over, our Know it. Treat it. campaign lives on to inspire and empower others.
