The Summer of TAG, a joint initiative undertaken by NASCAR/Indy Race Care driver Alex Tagliani and Food Allergy Canada, with the support of Pfizer Canada (Canadian distributor of EpiPen®), raised awareness about food allergies and food allergy management across Canada this summer.
Alex’s racing summer started off with a bang on June 21st in Round 3 of the 2015 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, when he lapped the entire field en route for the win. More racing success followed, culminating on August 10th, when it was announced that Alex would be inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame. Throughout the Summer of TAG, Alex’s wife Bronte and newborn daughter Eva Rose were a part of it all.
When he wasn’t racing, Alex was doing outreach on an issue that is close to his heart: food allergy awareness. He visited with local families, allergists and healthcare professionals in Vancouver, Edmonton and Halifax. Together, they discussed allergy management strategies, and raised awareness in the broader community at the same time. Alex speaks from experience: he has severe allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. The children had lots of questions for Alex about managing his allergies, staying safe on the road, at home, and on the racetrack.
Alex also spoke with the media through the summer, about his races and about food allergy safety.
In Food Allergy Canada’s My Allergy Hero Contest, kids across Canada have been writing in to Alex about their “allergy hero, that special person who helps them safely manage their allergies. Selected entries have a chance to win an Apple iPad Air 2 and an opportunity to meet Alex this fall. The Allergy Hero will also receive a $500 gift card. Winners will be announced September 14th. We have received so many wonderful entries, it’s going to be hard to choose. Thanks to all who entered and shared their stories.
We are proud of Alex and all that he does for people with allergies, and proud of Food Allergy Canada’s role in the Summer of TAG allergy awareness program!
